Canvas Works: Upcycling to a brighter future

Canvas Works is an innovative social enterprise programme wholly owned by Oarsome Chance.

Social enterprise that brings about change in young lives

We use donated sails, canvas materials, ropes and much more, crafting them into ‘upcycled’ products such as wallets, bags and bracelets.

This gives Canvas Works, the perfect platform to train young people in industry standard skills to help achieve a brighter future.

In our fully equipped studio, students are involved with the design and construction of the products through our in-house training programme.

Limited Edition collections

Alex Thomson Racing Collection

Alex Thomson, patron of Oarsome Chance and skipper of HUGO BOSS, which finished 2nd in the 2016 Vendee Globe, has kindly donated the sails from this race to our charity.

These donated sails are now at the end of their useful racing life and will, in the hands of Canvas Works, be reborn in the form of unique, handmade products.

Jolie Brise Collection

Jolie Brise, arguably one of the most famous tall ships in the world, has been sailed and maintained by pupils from Dauntsey's School for 40 years.

Named after France’s equivalent of the Beaufort scale force five wind, Jolie Brise was designed by Paumelle and launched at Le Havre in 1913. She was the penultimate Gaff Cutter in the Pilot Service before the change from sail to steam and the last boat to carry the Royal Mail under sail. She has won the Fastnet Race three times, including the first race in 1925 and more recently with Dauntsey’s pupils on board she has been overall winner of the Tall Ships Races four times.

Skipper to Jolie Brise, Toby Marris, is one of Oarsome Chance's Patrons and Canvas Works is now upcycling Jolie Brise's signature, terracotta coloured 'tan bark' sails, into fantastic special edition products.

Every Limited Edition handcrafted bag and bracelet has its own story to tell, however due to the limited source materials available, there are only so many of these unique products that can be made.

Are you a company or race team with sails to donate?
